SAP ROLL-OUTS

SAP rollouts involve transfer of a template solution implemented in one of the group companies to other companies of the same group. This kind of implementation becomes increasingly popular as a more cost effective solution.

The savings in a rollout project result mainly from:

- implementation of the same model business processes across the entire group to avoid time consuming design of individual solutions for each of company,
- drawing on a tested SAP implementation based either on the existing production system used in a particular country or on a template combining the best practices from a number of countries where the group operates,
- centralized technical infrastructure and the related support functions,
- transfer of know-how between branches thanks to using the same solution which, additionally facilitates implementation of the project.

A number of threats are associated with corporate rollouts. While planning a rollout project, the following aspects should be taken into consideration:

Legal specificity of the rollout country
The legal and accounting environment determining the business processes must be taken into account in the designed solution, in particular including tax regulations and the requirements concerning generation of accounting documents, e.g. invoices.

Business specificity of the rollout country
When transferring a business model template, attention should be paid to its modification necessary to take into account the aspects specific to a particular country. The business reality and the commonly accepted business rules can make the implementation of a template more difficult or even impossible.

Technical terms
Establishment of a centralized IT function dedicated to servicing numerous countries restricts the opportunities for adapting the software to the needs of respective countries. Cooperation with a remote competence centre in the head office may turn out to be insufficient.

Knowledge transfer
Due to time constrictions and a tight schedule typical of rollout implementations, transfer of knowledge to new system users becomes difficult. Often, the problem is additionally complicated by lack of full support of the consultants operating on the local market with a thorough insight into the business and legal specificity of the country, evidenced by a number of successful implementation projects.

The answer to this problem is engagement of a local consulting company which can provide knowledge about the legal and business framework in a given country. When participating in rollouts, HICRON always recommends performance of the Gap Analysis prior to commencement of project work. The goal of the analysis is to define the optimum scope of implementation work and to identify the areas in which the template should be adapted to the local requirements. The HICRON project approach guarantees drafting of a suitable schedule and action plan which will facilitate execution of the project.
